Many theories have been developed to explain this sudden rise in obesity that refuses to drop, but none of them hold water. The real culprit is the food industry. The way we eat has changed dramatically since the '70s. This resulted from the boom in technology. Machines were created to make fast food a possibility. And in addition, the food industry became more intelligent about manufacturing sweet, high-calorie foods. Since we naturally are attracted to sweet and delicious foods, it became easy for almost everyone to be obese. It was only a matter of time.

There are various health benefits of fiber, but here are the two major benefits. Number one, fiber is an appetite suppressant, which means when you take adequate fiber, you won't feel the usual urge to consume too many calories than you can burn. Secondly, fiber serves as nutrients to the mutual bacteria in your gut. These bacteria help facilitate processes like body vitamin production, while they are in turn fed and sheltered by the body.

Fiber is extremely important to weight loss, but, sadly, not many people know about it. You know the situation is bad when you check for the best sources of fiber in America and find French fries topping the list. Fruits, legumes, and whole grains are wonderful sources to consider.

Water-rich foods

Just like fiber, Michael Greger explains that water-rich foods “add bulk to food without adding calories.” Foods like vegetables and fruits which have high water content will get you satisfied easily, and reduce your appetite for any high-calorie food.

Scientifically, most vegetables have over 90% water content, while fruits have an average of 80%. Your diet should consist of more of these two classes of food. Processed or junk foods like candy, pizza, and hamburgers have very little water content, that's why you're able to keep eating them and not get easily satisfied.

Meat and bread have about 30% water content. You can't make up for the water content of such foods by taking plenty of cups of water when eating them. You will get filled easily, but that doesn't translate to eating less.

You should also consider foods that are low in fat and added sugar. Foods like leafy greens (spinach, lettuce, and kale are good examples), beans, legumes, and fruits.

But that observation led to a discovery: in the absence of pleasure and fun, the body is smart enough to limit your consumption when you're overweight.

Does this mean people are obese because they intentionally go against the natural restrictions of their bodies? In part, yes. But it's a little more complex than that. You see, we have two appetite control systems: the homeostatic system (which seeks to maintain weight balance) and the hedonic system (which responds to pleasure and palatability). When food appeals strongly to our senses of sight, taste, and smell, then the hedonic system kicks in immediately, making us eat as much as — or even more than — our stomach can take.

The same thing happens to the hedonic system when we see different food varieties that appeal to our senses.
