Nutrition Myths Busted - Soy Foods Cause Cancer

S

oy Foods Cause Cancer!

How true is this?

In our series "Nutrition Myths Busted" we bust common nutrition myths & replace them with evidence based nutrition!

Why has Soy been linked to cancer in the first place?🤔

🐭In animal studies, rodents that were exposed to high doses of compounds found in soy called isoflavones showed an increased risk of breast cancer. This was thought to be because the isoflavones in soy can act like estrogen in the body, and increased estrogen has been linked to certain types of breast cancer.

This may be true in rats, but what about in humans?👩🏻‍🤝‍👨🏼

📑Studies have found that rodents process Soy differently from humans. Human studies have found no evidence that soy foods like soya milk were associated with risk of breast cancer.

🥛However dairy foods, especially milk, were associated with increased risk of breast cancer.

What's more?

🧬 Soy foods are excellent sources of protein, especially when they replace other, less healthy foods such as animal fats and red or processed meats.

🍶 Dr. Fraser's team in a recent, large study at Loma Linda University found that substituting dairy milk with soya milk is associated with a 40% reduced risk of breast cancer!

💪🏼 Soya is rich in natural plant-based isoflavones, which may block the effect of our body's own estrogen where it matters, reducing risk of breast and ovarian cancer.

Not only do Soy foods not cause cancer, they protect us against certain types of cancers. These benefits in addition to soy being a great protein source makes it a great addition to your daily diet.

How to include Soy in your daily meals?

🍛 Soya beans can be made into a variety of Indian dishes including sundal, gravies and curries.

🍲 Pureed soya makes for a great base for gravies Indian and continental alike. Creamy, full and super healthy.

🧀 Tofu is not only a great way of including soya in your diet but a substitute for paneer as well! It goes well in pulav, stir-fries, curries, the list is endless.

🥛 Soya mylk and curds make for great dairy replacements and a way of including soy in your daily diet. Make smoothies and shakes to change it up.

🌯 Soya flour can be mixed in with whole wheat or millet flour to power up your rotis!
